Today (as I’ve been reminded by other posts) is World Mental Health Day.
Some of you may know what I’ve been going through on and off over the last 18 months and while I’m not diagnosed with any particular issues, I do suffer from anxiety and am constantly battling with self-inflicted perceptions of not being good enough and taking things too personally. I beat myself up when things are perfect. And I’m over critical of situations which I think are unfair. This is just a bit of what I deal with. Along with struggles with how I look, what I want to achieve and what I expect from myself.
Having been through the roller coaster of a startup, the loneliness of being a founder and even today just trying to survive being an adult, I know mental health affects us all in different ways. Some mental health symptoms have names. Others just are a a factor of the world we live it. Some are diagnosed and others are just coping mechanisms. They aren’t all about mindfullness or therapy or medication. It’s personal. However it feels to anyone, it’s important to have a support network around you. Just someone who you can talk to when you need it. Whether that’s professional or a friend or family member.
Friends mean everything
As I’ve learnt the hard way, it’s also important to listen and not always try to give advice. Just sit quietly and let them talk. After ask what you can do to help, if anything and say you’ll be there when they need you.
Even if it’s not you, you probably have a friend who might be suffering. They may not have told you or you might be the best friend they turn to.
Time to make this discussion mainstream
Let’s help make this no longer a stigma. Let’s help everyone feel more comfortable talking about it. So that we can help everyone make the first steps to feeling better.
